Answer

Recently I've noticed the spread of moss in a significant part of our grass lawn. What is the best way to eliminate it and ensure that it does not return? Thanks, Terry When moss shows up in your lawn, it usually means that there is too much shade from the tree limbs overhead. The shade is preventing the soil from drying out; hence the moss takes over because it likes damp, shady conditions. Also, there may not be enough sunlight to support grass growth. Grass needs up to 6-8 hours of sunlight a day to thrive. So as the shade increases, the lawn dies out. The soil supporting the lawn may also be on the acidic side which would encourage the growth of moss instead of grass. Grass plants prefer a pH of 6.5-6.8 to thrive. Sprigs & Twigs can do a soil test to determine the pH and recommend corrective action. However, correcting soil pH without addressing the lack of sunlight will not get rid of the moss. The trees need to be thinned or removed to allow more sunlight to come through. As soon as more sunlight hits the ground, the moss will dry up and die and the grass will start to grow in thicker. Sunlight is the key.

We can also help you with the trees. Just give our office a call and our tree care manager would be happy to come over and give you an estimate.
