Early Childhood Landscape Learning Initiative This week I wanted to depart from my usual question and answer format to share with you some special news. This past week Sprigs & Twigs launched our “Early Childhood Landscape Learning Initiative” in partnership with First Leaps Together pre-school in Ledyard where we installed a sensory garden designed especially for children. This garden is intended to expand children’s awareness of and passion for plants and the outdoors. Kristin Curran, Sprigs & Twigs Landscape Designer, chose plants to create experiences for children that emphasize their senses of smell, touch, hearing and sight as well as fueling their curiosity. Ashley Willis, also of Sprigs & Twigs, created a companion curriculum to be used throughout the school year with elements intended to develop skills in areas such as mathematical/cognitive, social/emotional, literacy, dramatic play, art, and sensory/science. Undaunted by the cool drizzle, the garden was enthusiastically installed by the children and staff of First Leaps Together and the staff of Sprigs & Twigs! My special thanks to Krista Bordeleau, owner of First Leaps Together!
